School/Department Information
The High School Academic program provides approximately 275 young artists in grades 9-12 with rigorous instruction within the core disciplines of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, and Health and Physical Education, leading to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts high school diploma. The program also provides other academic support for students including PSAT, SAT, and AP testing and college and career counseling.
Primary Description of Work
The Guidance Counselor, under the supervision of the Associate Dean and Dean of the High School Academic Program, provides guidance services in the areas of academics, personal and social adjustment, and college and career planning for students in the High School of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). The Guidance Counselor is responsible for working with students, parents, and other UNCSA professional staff to plan an appropriate academic program for each high school student. Work also includes providing assistance with academic components of new student orientation, administering College Board tests and exams, and assisting students with developing appropriate time management skills.
Work Schedule and hours
Monday-Friday, occasional Saturday
This is a 11-month position
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Academic Admissions, Counseling, and Academic Course Scheduling
  • Partner with the creation of UNCSA transcripts for new students
  • Guide students in choosing appropriate academic courses
  • Counsel students with academic concerns
  • Monitor student progress towards graduation

College and Career Planning
  • Present sessions to students on the college application process in various settings
  • Guide students with choosing and applying to appropriate colleges
  • Complete counselor recommendation forms as required for college applications
  • Guide students with identifying and applying for honors and scholarships including UNCSA high school academic awards

Students with Disabilities
  • Coordinate the documentation for students with disabilities in collaboration with parents and the UNCSA Director of Disability Services Manage the process for identifying and serving high school students with disabilities
  • Communicate appropriate learning accommodations to teachers of students with disabilities

Testing
  • Coordinate PSAT, SAT and Advanced Placement testing Proctor PSAT, SAT, and AP exams
  • Assist with UNCSA placement testing as needed Interpret testing data and other student data for students, parents, faculty, and the UNCSA community as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree required, preferably in Education, Counseling, or Counselor Education or related field with a minimum 3-5 years experience in High School Counseling, preferred
